Shopify, website, and Amazon image sizes

Use these recommendations as practical export targets. A required minimum comes from the platform specification; a working size is a reliable production target rather than a mandatory dimension. Platform themes, modules, and placements can still crop images responsively, so keep important content away from the edges and use the focal-point preview before exporting.

Shopify

Shopify themes are flexible, so most placements do not enforce one universal dimension. Shopify’s product, website, and brand-asset templates live together in the E-commerce category, separated into clear Shopify groups. There is no separate collection template: Shopify recommends a consistent aspect ratio for collection images, but does not publish one fixed collection-image dimension.

Shopify accepts product and collection images up to 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels, with a file size smaller than 20 MB. Product zoom needs an image of at least 800 × 800 px, but that threshold is not offered as a separate template because it is a minimum capability check, not a good production target. Product thumbnails are also omitted because Shopify publishes a 150–300 px range rather than one exact export size and automatically creates smaller versions for different theme placements.

Website images

Shopify’s website guide also publishes the following suggested desktop and mobile sizes. These live under E-commerce → Shopify Website and E-commerce → Shopify Brand Assets, preserving their Shopify source rather than presenting them as platform-neutral Web & SEO recommendations. The guide notes that responsive themes may need different render sizes.

The source table labels the portrait 360 × 640 background and lightbox sizes as 16:9; their actual width-to-height ratio is 9:16. IMPIB follows the published pixel dimensions and identifies those mobile templates as portrait assets.

Amazon product listings

Amazon product images must be from 500 to 10,000 px on their longest side. Amazon recommends 1000 px or more for the best customer experience and to enable zoom, and recommends JPEG. TIFF, PNG, and non-animated GIF are also accepted. The catalogue uses 2000 × 2000 px as a high-quality square working size; Amazon does not mandate that exact dimension or a square ratio.

For a main listing image, use a pure white background (#FFFFFF), show the actual product without extra graphics or watermarks, and let the product occupy at least 85% of the frame.

Amazon may crop as much as 15% from each side of a Store hero. Place faces, products, logos, and text in the central safe area and verify the result in both desktop and mobile previews.

The full-width preset targets Amazon’s recommended 3000 × 1500 px high-resolution shoppable image and the required full-width text-over-image/video-cover size. A plain full-width image tile can be variable-height and has a lower 1500 px minimum width. Amazon also allows custom mobile layouts for full-width, large, and medium image tiles without one fixed aspect ratio, so IMPIB does not invent exact mobile Store templates for those placements. Store header and image-tile files are capped at 5 MB.

The file-size values are Amazon submission limits, not automatic output targets. Use IMPIB’s target file-size mode where appropriate and verify the final downloaded file before submission.

Amazon’s current REC page explicitly specifies the tall responsive asset as 900 × 1600 px. An older component-based page still shows a contradictory square “recommended” value beside its 9:16 label; the catalogue follows the newer, internally consistent REC specification. REC’s separate brand-logo field has flexible proportions with minimum dimensions of 600 × 100 px, so it is documented here rather than misrepresented as an exact-ratio template.

Formats and cropping

  • Amazon product and Store presets default to JPEG because it is broadly accepted and recommended for photographic marketplace assets. The Store logo also offers PNG. Amazon Ads static-image templates offer both JPEG and PNG, matching the current REC file-format specification.
  • The Shopify product preset offers only formats that Shopify explicitly accepts for upload. PNG is listed first, followed by JPEG, matching Shopify’s stated preference; WebP remains available. Shopify’s website guide discusses AVIF as a modern web format, but Shopify’s upload requirements do not list AVIF. The Shopify product template therefore does not recommend AVIF even though IMPIB can generate it for other web-delivery workflows.
  • Shopify Website photo templates offer WebP, JPEG, and PNG—the upload formats supported by Shopify that IMPIB can generate. Shopify Brand Assets prioritize PNG and WebP to preserve sharp edges and transparency. AVIF remains available elsewhere in IMPIB, but is not recommended by these Shopify-upload templates.
  • Cover fills the destination and may crop edges around the focal point.
  • Contain preserves the whole source and adds the selected padding background when needed.
  • A source smaller than a required template is skipped unless Allow safe upscaling is enabled in App Settings → App → Image sizing. Enlargement uses resampling and cannot restore missing detail.
